1. Introductions and Welcome: The SLS Council meeting commenced at 12:30 pm. Mary-Carol Lindbloom, newly appointed Director of the SCRLC was welcomed to the area and to our Council.
2. NYS Summer Reading Program: The theme of the 2008 NYS Summer Reading Program is; Catch the Reading Bug @ Your Library (Children), and Metamorphosis @ Your Library (Young Adults). The SLS has purchased and distributed Summer Reading posters to all our school libraries. The SLS has a copy of the program outlines along with the activity sheets, puzzles and coloring sheets. 3. Database/CCD CoSER: The 2008-2009 Database Requests forms have been received. A copy of the final pricing for the databases ordered by each district will be sent to that district’s SLS council member. Auburn and Port Byron are participating in CCD in 2008-2009.
4. SLMS – Tarrytown: Diana Wendell and Ann Voorhees reviewed the various events and programs they attended at SLMS. Next years SLMS conference will be held in Saratoga Springs, April 30th-May 2 2009 - Keynote: Esme Raji Codell, theme “Educational Leaders @ your library.
5. School Library System Annual meeting: The annual meeting will be held in late September 2008. Possible topics include: College librarian forum – what skills do students need when they enter college; Project Look Sharp – Media Literacy/Elections, Dr. Ruth Small – Designing Digital Literacy Programs with IM-PACT: Information Motivation, Purpose, Audience, Content, Technique; Website authentication, citation information; new AASL standards. Please contact the SLS with your ideas concerning the annual meeting.
6. NYS Initiatives: Library materials aid will remain at $6.25 per pupil; the $5 million in library aid was reinstated (each system will have a 2% cut in the restored aid); New York State is loosing population, which will result in a reduction of LSTA funds for NOVELNY.
7. ILL: All requests for materials outside of our SLS must be placed by May 27th. All materials ordered outside of our SLS are due back by June 9th.

9. Other:
The SLS has extra copies of the newest edition of Scholastic’s “School Libraries Work”. Please contact the SLS if you would like additional copies.
The SLS annual evaluation form will be sent electronically using Survey Monkey. Please complete this evaluation.

DISTRICT REPORTS:
AUBURN: Mary Nellenback reported that the Auburn secondary libraries would be switching to OPALS in the fall.
CATO-MERIDIAN: Sue Cutri reported that the elementary library has been packed up to prepare for renovations. The database trials were used and assessed by students and teachers
JORDAN-ELBRIDGE: Dessa Bergen reported that the Reading Dragon promotion has taken off – students are eager to add scales to the dragon and fiction reading has increased this year.
PORT BYRON: Diana Wendell is President-Elect of SLMS (Diana will be President of SLMS in 2010). Diana will host a Poetry Slam together with the high school English dept. in June. She has loaded MARC records for the newly added E-books in the VIRTUAL REFERENCE LIBRARY.
SKANEATELES: Rachel Lewis would like information concerning the library security systems that member libraries are using.
SOUTHERN CAYUGA: Dawn Sedorus utilized and “Adventure Display” along the lines of Indiana Jones complete with Fedora and a bullwhip. The students and staff enjoyed this display very much. Staffing for the elementary library will change next year.
UNION SPRINGS: Lori Willey reported that Tim Green “Football Hero” would visit Union Springs in May. Farmer Minor and his pig Daisy presented a program in April.
WEEDSPORT: Jean Ferguson announced her retirement. (The Council wished her our best and thanked her for all her hard work on the Council).
SCRLC: Mary-Carol Lindbloom, Director SCRLC, has been with the Council for a month now. She plans to visit all the libraries in the SCRLC region this year and will continue to attend our Council meetings.
Seymour Library: Lisa Carr reported Seymour Library received a grant to develop a Teen Summer Reading Program. Details for this program will be available on the library website in June. Also, Lisa has been attending the 4 part series on Equal Access Libraries. Anyone interested in learning more about Equal Access Libraries, please contact me. There is a Youth Access component for this program and lots of ideas for programs/collaborations on the Webjunction website.
